What is a Body Sock?
A body sock is just what it sounds like…a pouch or sack that a child/adult can fit his/her entire body inside!  It’s made out of lightweight lycra so it’s extremely stretchy with a nice resistive quality to it.

Descriptions:
Swaddling is a natural comfort that we experience from birth. Childrens Body Awareness Pod is designed to support sensory processing in children that utilize their senses more readily to perform everyday task.

Good for tactile defensive children, sensory seekers and crashers (including children and tweens with autism)

The heavy duty stretch and elasticity allows children to move unobstructed while exploring in the safety and comfort of a pod that triggers natural relaxation and recognition experienced at birth.

Benefits of using a Body socks:
Body socks will help children with sensory processing disorders to work on "position in space" skills. They must kinesthetically feel what their bodies are doing and how they are coordinating their body movements.

Watching themselves in a mirror, or creating shadows, will help them develop this proprioceptive sense , which is often dysfunctional in children with sensory integration dysfunction / sensory processing disorders.

It also provides heavy work/deep pressure input that is both calming and organizing. Through all of these movement activities in the lycra "body sock", they will have comfortable, resistive material to push against and have pushing against them. This will benefit both children (or adults) with tactile defensiveness as well as the sensory seeking kids (you know them...the movers, shakers, crashers, endless "energizer bunnies"!)

NOTE: The "body sock" can also be used for sensory overloaded kids or children with Autism, PDD, Aspergers, or ADD/ADHD for a calming, sensory escape! Just let them crawl into it an sit in a quiet room, or in a play tent, tunnel, or play hut , or have them sit on an exercise ball and listen to calming music or watch a favorite movie that relaxes them.

The unique proprioceptive and tactile input children (or adults) experience with the body sock is unparalleled! Any child with sensory processing disorders / sensory integration dysfunction can benefit!

A body sock is a sensory-based tool used in occupational therapy sessions to provide proprioceptive and deep pressure input.

These types of input offer calming and organizing benefits to the participant. Made of Lycra, a body sock is a sack-like piece of stretchy fabric that covers the child’s entire body, with an opening for the head. It is likened to the idea of a sleeping bag, where one can climb completely inside. Most commercially available body socks have a Velcro-enclosure.

A body sock is portable, fun and can be used creatively!

Body socks are flexible in their use!

An occupational therapist can engage a client actively in a specific, therapeutically designed treatment activity; or it can be offered at home in a dramatic play area for dress-up.

Lightweight and easy to transport, it is great for therapists to have in their therapy “bag” of tricks, especially for home and school visits. A body sock has been used for clients with autism, who typically experience sensory processing difficulties.
Today, there are many children without autism who struggle with sensory regulation that can benefit from using a body sock.

What does a Body Sock do?
A body sock is used for sensory regulation, maintaining a calm but alert state; where impulses, emotions, and behavior are in check. It provides calming and organizing input to the participant, all over the body at the same time.

Using a body sock can promote the skill of body awareness knowing where your body is in space - meaning where your body begins and ends, and its proximity to other objects and people.

The body sock gives immediate feedback to the tactile and proprioceptive systems when it is worn, both in one static position or used for dynamic movement-based tasks.
Climbing inside a body sock can minimize visual input, especially when an environment is overwhelming.

It can target motor planning skills; challenging the user to figure out how to move the body while wearing it.
